About our Student Wellbeing Officer
Rhonda has been at Karoo since Term 4, 2015. Whilst Karoo PS is her first time in the role of Student Wellbeing Officer, she comes with an extensive background in working with families and children, in private practice as a counselor and family therapist; and in the welfare sector. She has also volunteered many hours in schools, as well as serving school councils, so is very familiar with the school environment.
Rhonda works two days a week, Monday and Thursday. She is seeking to develop wellbeing programs that will enhance the life of students and teachers, which will, among other things, involve lunch time activities in 2016. Rhonda will continue to be available to spend one on one time with students who require support during a difficult time. With a background in parent education, Rhonda is also seeking ways to engage with parents, offering helpful parenting tips, and other information that will enhance the wellbeing of their children.
Rhonda is available most Thursday mornings between 9am and 9.30am in the school Staff room to talk with parents.
Rhonda’s Motivation and Passion
It has been an enriching experience for me to be working with the Staff, students and parents at Karoo. I believe my role is to be a “presence” in the school community, and being available when people have a need to share with someone about a concern; an anxiety or even to share some of the good times. Walking around the school yard I encounter so many happy faces, and enjoy the “high fives” and the sharing of games and ideas. I find great joy in helping students through a difficult time and seeing positive changes in their lives. I also enjoy the communication with parents and staff. In a small way, I can be part of positive change in the lives of those I work with. I feel I am getting to know everybody at Karoo, and have a better understanding of the culture and history of the school. I am also happy to hear ideas from staff, parents and students about how we may work together to enhance the wellbeing of the entire school community.
Accessing the Student Wellbeing Officer
Rhonda works Monday and Thursday 8.30am to 4pm, and is based in the Community Centre. Students can talk to their teachers about speaking with Rhonda or they can talk directly to her during recess and lunch break. Parents can also speak with Rhonda about any concerns they may have in relation to their child’s wellbeing. Rhonda will always liaise with the teacher and parents when she has contact with a student. After the first meeting has occurred, parent permission is required for follow up sessions; these forms are available from Rhonda. You can phone Rhonda at the school or email: Rhonda@karoops.vic.edu.au.
