There are many ways in which a parent can assist the students, teachers and school community:
Toe by Toe Assisted Reading Program – Toe by Toe Program is a very simple yet successful system that develops skills and learning confidence in students. Volunteers work one-on-one with individual students on the program. Regular commitment is required. Please see Sue Austin if you wish to assist with this reading program. (Working with Children’s check required)
Excursions – Some excursions require additional parental supervision and teachers will arrange this directly with the parents of their students via excursion notes and student’s diaries. (Please note, only parents selected may attend the excursion – parents are discouraged from ‘meeting their children’ at the excursion venue). (Working with Children’s check required)
Camps – Camps are run for students in years 3 to 6. Extra parental supervision is required and teachers will arrange this directly with the parents of their students via the camp notices. (School Council approval and Working with Children’s check required).
Sporting events – From time to time assistance is required with sporting events with coaching, refereeing, scoring or simply travelling with the teams to ensure adult-child ratios are correct. Calls for this kind of assistance are via our newsletter and often require a ‘tear off reply slip’ to be returned to the school. (Working with Children’s check required)
Fundraising or Karoo Parent Association activities - Parent assistance may be required with special events organised by our fundraising committee and the KPA (such as morning teas, Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls, sausage sizzles). Communication is via our newsletter when events are being planned and often require a reply slip to be completed and returned. Information is also distributed via the KPA email. Refer to our Karoo Parents’ Association page.
Covering new books -New books are regularly purchased by the school for use in either the classrooms or the library. Contacting them is the ideal way of protecting them and ensure they are able to be used for years on end. Helpers are sought to assist with this task via the newsletter.
Sick Bay washing - The linen in our sick bay requires regular laundering and parents may volunteer to be placed on the washing roster to take home the 2 doona covers to wash. Generally you will only be required to wash the linen two or three times in a year.
*A Working with Children’s Check is required for parents assisting with excursions, camps and sporting events. Applications may be completed online or a form can be collected from your local Post Office and once complete, the form must be lodged at the Post Office (you will need a passport size photo). This process may take 6-8 weeks to complete. There is no charge for a volunteer application and is valid for 5 years.
