The Performing Arts program at Karoo is based on AusVELS and the Orff Schulwerk approach to teaching music. Orff Schulwerk combines music and movement to teach musical concepts, creativity and life skills such as building confidence, self-esteem, social, cognitive, emotional, physical and aesthetic development.

The school has an excellent Music Room equipped with many instruments including keyboard, tuned and un-tuned percussion. There are whole grade sets of instruments including ukuleles, xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels.

There are many performing arts occasions during our school year including:

  • Monday morning assembly performances
  • A school production or concert (these occur bi-annually for Year 3/4)
  • Christmas Carols concert for the entire school by every year level.
  • Year 3/4 choir performances throughout the school year
  • Year 5 and Year 6 choir performances throughout the school year
  • State School Spectacular for Year 5 students

Classroom Program

Students look forward to their weekly lesson with the Specialist Teacher in the Performing Arts Room. Singing, dancing, drama, playing tuned / un-tuned instruments, creating and performing are features of our program. Assembly performance is a regular opportunity to showcase developing performance skills.

One Day One Song is scheduled for a day in Term 4. The idea of this nationwide initiative is for every student in Australia to sing the same (original) song, at the same time and on the same day! We have been eager participants since the first song in 2007. Every student from Prep to Year 6 is involved. At Karoo we have a special interest in dance, and, as our own initiative include movement choreographed by students.

The date this year is October 29.

All Year 3/4 students learn to play the recorder as part of the weekly Music lesson.

Incursions

A developmental sequence of annual visiting performers has enabled further consolidation, extension and enrichment. Performances have included Musica Viva and Ozopera, Jon Madin, Gillian Eastoe, Aussie Kids Rock and Rock Ed.

Instrumental Music Tuition

Interested students can enrol with Online Music Solutions for weekly lessons. The program offers keyboard, guitar, woodwind and drums. An exciting additional instrumental offering this year will be string tuition (violin and cello). Online Music enrolment forms are available from the school office.

Annual Christmas Concert

Each Year Level and the Choirs dress for the occasion and perform an item. This has become an eagerly awaited and much appreciated event.
